Preparing your Greek learning experience...
Discover the story behind our mission to make Greek language learning accessible, engaging, and effective for everyone.
Welcome to Speak Greek Now – a resource born out of my own journey learning Greek, fuelled by passion, persistence, and the desire to finally bridge the cultural and linguistic gap I felt growing up half-Greek.
I've been studying Greek for over ten years. While that might sound like a long time, it's been a winding road – full of stops and starts, moments of clarity, and moments of frustration. Greek isn't an easy language, especially if, like me, you're not surrounded by it daily. What I found was that, although there are plenty of beginner resources out there, materials that truly cater to upper-intermediate learners and beyond are scarce. And that's where Speak Greek Now comes in.
This website is designed with learners like me in mind – people who aren't starting from scratch but still feel there's a long way to go before fluency. People who can read a paragraph but stumble over idiomatic expressions. People who can understand a conversation but occasionally hit a wall when one unknown word throws the whole meaning off. This site is for those who are hungry to not just understand Greek but to speak it, feel it, and use it naturally.
Much of my own learning journey was pieced together through reading Greek texts, jotting down words I didn't know, and trying to figure them out through context. I'd constantly be asking native speakers, friends, or tutors, "What does this word mean here?" or "Why did they use this verb tense?" Sometimes I'd get an answer. Sometimes I wouldn't. Either way, the learning continued, bit by bit.
What I needed – and what I hope Speak Greek Now provides – is a structure that acknowledges how far you've come, but also challenges you to go further. You won't find endless basic grammar lessons here or hours of beginner dialogues. Instead, you'll find content focused on real, meaningful Greek – the kind used in newspapers, films, conversations, and social media. Each lesson includes carefully selected readings, with context-rich vocabulary explanations, realistic discussion questions, and thought-provoking prompts that make you actively use the language.
You'll also notice that I place a big emphasis on filling in the blanks. I've always found that understanding a sentence fully often depends on one or two key words or phrases. So, many of the exercises here are about identifying and understanding those missing pieces. Not just what a word means in isolation, but how it works in the flow of a sentence or a conversation.
Greek is a beautiful, expressive language. It's poetic and powerful, full of history and nuance. But to really connect with it, you need more than just lists of verbs and vocabulary. You need the kind of exposure that feels real, that mimics how people actually speak, write, and think in Greek today.
That's what Speak Greek Now aims to offer – a resource for learners who are serious about Greek, who don't want to stay stuck at an intermediate plateau, and who are ready to immerse themselves in the language in a way that's both practical and inspiring.
